My First Time Container Gardening – Week Nine

I had a couple surprise this week when I went out on Saturday to check on the plants.

July 30 2016

I still have to clean up the leaves but the plant is doing good. Next year I will only be doing two per pot though. I think they need that extra root room.

They are starting to mature and very much turning pink! It is a pretty cool process to see. I will be double checking to see how to tell when these guys are mature for picking. I think a few of the will be ready by next weekend.

Now I had mentioned that I had two tomato plants that may or may not make it. They also needed to be separated from the pot they were sharing. To my surprise not only did both of them come alive but there was a surprise third tomato that also came back to life. I have one Black Yum Yum and two Juane De St Vincent.

July 30 2016

So many mistakes that I need to correct for next year. These are the Juane De St Vincent tomatoes. Separating them was quite the experience. I think they will make  it though as I checked on them not to long ago and the looked very well.

In the white pot is the Black Yum Yum, I decided against name plate stakes since I only have a few plants. These pots are borrowed from my Mother as well. They are self watering. Now the plants will end up coming into the house since I had a lack of time perception. No matter what I am still happy with how things are going and only slightly disappointed on the amount of mistakes I have made, Also all the poor plants I have lost.

My First Time Container Gardening – Week Three (Part Two)

I thought I would have a lot more progress this week but I did not. I faced a couple things week. The Tanyas Pink Pods had Spider Mites. I say ‘had’ because rinsing the plants off I have not seen them again. Just in case I did pick up some stuff from the hardware store. Once they are outside they can end up with more than just a few Spider Mites. I also am trying to start hardening them off, I just have to see how the weekend goes with the weather. It has been so up and down that I am nervous they will just die.

I also lost both of the Sugar Baby seedlings. I do not quite know what happened. I think it is to late in the season to try to germinate another plant but I have not quite decided on that one yet. I would not be able to move that plant in the house if they were not ready to harvest but the time it starts to get chilly.

June 16 2016

The Thelma Sanders looks good. I am waiting for the second set of leaves to get a bit bigger before I harden it off. I also have to wait for my other pots to come in. It should work out in my favour.

June 16 2016

Tanyas Pink Pods look perfect (in my opinion). Plus, they seem to be holding up when they can get outside.

June 16 2016

The Ground Cherrries are still small and cute. I definatley have to look into their growing cycle since I am getting paranoid that they will not make it in the growing season. Lesson learned for next year.

I am hoping things start to get a little more exciting in the next week or two.

My First Time Container Gardening – Week One

I have an update here! It has been so difficult to wait a full week to do this. I mean that shows how excited I am about the plants ha-ha. I want to note quickly that I had to update the title of the first post since this is technically week one (since a week has passed from the planting date). Let’s see what has happened so far.

May 31 2016

I took this photo on Tuesday (May 31) because I was so excited that plants were coming up. I had to show mom. You can see the Tanya’s Pink Pods are just sprouting like no tomorrow. The front Thelma Sanders squash is starting to poke out of the dirt. You can just barley see it but the front Sugar Baby watermelon is starting to crack the surface. On to the pictures for today though.

I have moved my plants into the laundry room (it is kind of muggy out today) since this will closely match the amount of sun they will receive outside. Now the Tanya’s Pink Pods are just flourishing, I should have used a bigger peat pot though. I did think about this after. It’ll still work out though, I will just upgrade the size on the next batch.

On the left we have the ever so cute plant Sugar Baby watermelon and on the right there is the Thelma Sanders squash plant which seems to be going strong. These guys still have a ways to go before I am ready to transplant them. So far I have not seen any cracking on the other plants. Although I have not lost hope yet. I do believe I start the Ground Cherries wrong though. I will give them another four to five days before giving it a second shot. At this point I am just happy there has been some success.

I have some stuff on their way from Edible Antiques which I am insanely excited about. I also got the okay to do a review but I have been talking about Stacey’s operation enough already that you just need to go check out what she has and order!

I cant wait to see the growth and changes next week. I also cant wait to plant more vegetables.

My First Time Container Gardening – Week Zero

Last week I had put up a post on how I was going to do a container garden series this year. Even more exciting since I will be doing it from beginning to end; instead of just pieces here and there for other people. So here it goes!

Now I do not have everything, I still have some seeds I need to purchase and pots to order. Below is a photo of what my ‘not a waste of time or money’ project looks like so far.

Seedlings Started on May 24 2016
Seedlings Started on May 24 2016

Now I really tried to put the names on the picture through various photo editors but they all kept crashing at the save point. So, I gave up.

Starting from the beginning, I borrowed the tray from Mom (I am the first one to use it :D) plus a clear plastic dome top. I am using Jiffy Peat Pots and Schultz Seed Starter. I opted for Shultz because I do use their plant food which I quite like. Those were purchased at Canadian Tire.

Now for the plants. Starting from left to right.

Tanya’s Pink Pod Beans – Pumpkin Moon (Fall 2014) **See Note Below

Thelma Sanders Squash – Free Gift from Edible Antiques (Fall 2014)

Sugar Baby Watermelon – Pumpkin Moon (Fall 2014) **See Note Below

Ground Cherry – Purchased from Edible Antiques (Fall 2014)

I will be purchasing four more varieties of seeds from Edible Antiques again. I was very pleased with service I had received. While I did not have any issues I did 100% feel like I would get results if there had been a problem. I will hopefully be doing (pending approval) a full review with the new purchase.

Right now there really is not much to show. I planted two of the last three in case one does not come out healthy. I will be planting six to eight bean plants which made four seem like a safe number. Another four will be started after these ones get put in their container.

I will stop this here. I also want to note I will add other pictures to this post sometime in the next couple days. It is late and I wanted to get this done. Fingers crossed everything turns out good!

**Pumpkin Moon Farms were purchased by another company since I have order from them. It does seem that the purchasing company was already established. I however have not and will not be ordering from them this year. There is a possibility in the future as I would like to continue purchasing heirloom seeds with in Canada. If you do have any experience with the new owning company I would love to hear about your experience.
